Out and About

The Steamy Pacific Comes to Steamy Moscow
Ian Mitchell

O
n Monday 26 July, the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines held a gastronomic evening to launch Filipino Culinary Week, which was held in the Café Swiss at the Swissotel, Krasniy Holmi, near Paveletskaya. The evening’s festivities were introduced by the manager of the Swissotel, and the event opened by the Philippine Ambassador to Russia. Traditional music and dancing were features of the evening, as well as a lavish selection of Philippine dishes prepared by two visiting chefs from the Makati Shangri-La Hotel in Manilla. The event was preliminary to celebration of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the then USSR. It was ironic that the temperature in Moscow on the night was higher than that in the near equatorial islands whence the food and chefs came, presumably expecting conditions less tropical.
