How to: negotiate your way around the supermarket.
The new supermarkets are a lot more efficient than old style retail in Russia, but you still need to know a few phrases. Here are some essentials:
Can’t find what you’re looking for?
Где можно найти хлеб? Where can I find some bread?
Не могу найти зубную пасту. Вы не знаете, где она? I can’t find the toothpaste. Do you know where it is?
Помогите, пожалуйста, я ищу мясо Can you help me please?, I’m looking for meat.
Don’t forget to weigh your produce before you hit the tills:
Взвесьте, пожалуйста. Could you weigh this please?
Эти яблоки идут поштучно. These apples are weighed item by item.
Так много? Я не буду брать. So much? I’ll pass on them.
At the deli counter:
Скажите, пожалуйста, салат сегодняшний? Can you tell me please, is that salad fresh (literally: is it today’s salad?).
Дайте, пожалуйста, двести грамм. Can I have 200g (half a pound) please?
Дайте, пожалуйста, грамм двести. Can I have 200g or so please? (the inversion makes the measurement approximate rather than precise).
В салате есть грибы/орехи? Are there mushrooms/nuts in the salad?
The bakery counter:
У вас хлеб свежий? – Is your bread fresh?
Дайте, пожалуйста, кусочек/целый торт. Can I have a piece/a whole cake.
Эти булочки хорошо выглядят, а как они на вкус? These rolls look good, what do they taste like?
The last hurdle:
Мы не принимаем кредитные карты. We don’t take cards.
Поменьше не будет? У меня не будет сдачи. Have you got anything smaller? I don’t have change.
У вас есть дисконтная карта? Do you have a discount card?
Пакет платный. You have to pay for a plastic bag.
